Sweden: Free Hotel Rooms if You Do a Digital Detox

According to influencer marketing agency Mediakix, an average person spends more than 5 years of their lives on social media. Hotel Bellora Gothenburg, Sweden, seeks to change this by giving out free hotel rooms in exchange for a complete digital disconnect throughout the duration of the stay.

Your room rates depend on how much you use Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter or Instagram. Essentially, the more time you spend on these social apps, the more you pay for your room. All part of Bellora’s plan to help guests fully relax with loved ones away from the distractions of social media.

Don’t worry, the chambermaids aren’t going to hole up in your room monitoring your usage. Ironically, technology will help monitor technology. The room uses a Skärmfri (Screen-free) smart lamp to ‘keep tabs’ on you.

Using the room’s Wifi, guests connect their devices to the lamp which will glow white when it measures up to only 30 minutes of recommended screen time. After that, when the lamp starts glowing red, you’re going to have to pay for your room in full. But of course, if you don’t use your phone at all, your room is Hotel Bellora’s way of rewarding your successful digital detox.
