Lifestyle Special: The Alex Blake Charlie Sessions

2019’s best-kept music secret, and one any indie music lover will not want to miss is only two weeks away. The first-ever edition of Singapore’s newest music festival, The Alex Blake Charlie Sessions takes place on 7 Dec at Pasir Panjang Power Station. It will be also the first large-scale music event at the decommissioned station which is ear-marked for rejuvenation under the Greater Southern Waterfront plan.
THE ORGANISER
Organised by 24OWLS, a new business collective comprising the people behind the last five editions of Laneway Festival Singapore, the day-long music celebration features a forward-looking, female-fronted line-up of artists, both Singaporean and international, many of whom are making their debuts here.
THE ARTISTS
Be intrigued by Cate Le Bon, the acclaimed Welsh avant-pop musician who is getting some of her career’s best accolades with her weirdly beautiful fifth album Reward; and then be blown away by the infectious power-pop doozies of Brooklyn band Charly Bliss, with frontwoman Eva Hendricks, as well as the fearless post-punkers Goat Girl from London.
Dance along with fellow Londoners Kero Kero Bonito, as indie-pop darling Sarah Midori Perry half-raps, half-sings her way to your heart. The fierce duo of Nancy Whang and Rayna Russom will tear the house down with a joint-DJ showcase as Ladies of LCD Soundsystem; while Northern Irish singer-songwriter SOAK, aka Bridie Monds-Watson, whose smart and dreamy indie-pop will reel you in and never let you go. Not forgetting our Singaporean sistas: Ginette Chittick will regale you with her sonic adventures into indie rock and Vandetta, the alluring electro-soul-R&B songstress who moves between genres fluidly.
Catch A/K/A SOUNDS, stage name of Amanda Keisha Ang, who is also part of the Singapore all-girl music and art collective ATTAGIRL, funk out house, disco and techno beats. Watch ALMA, Finnish pop heroine and alumna of Finland’s Idols, dish out instant pop hooks together with her gorgeously raspy voice. Making dream-pop so pristine, it could soundtrack a winter disco or a Fjord expedition, Norwegian artist Anna Lotterud aka Anna of the North will certainly make you groove. Dream Wife, Icelandic-Britpunk-rock trio–comprising vocalist Rakel Mjöll, guitarist Alice Go and bassist Bella Podpadec, will kick serious butt.
Hailed as the finest Swedish pop export since Robyn and with fans such as Kate Perry, LÉON flaunts a throaty rasp in her formidable vocal arsenal. And finally, the indie-folk assasin; Stella Donnely. The Welsh-Aussie newcomer purrs so sweetly, but her aim is true: bullies, chauvinists, anyone who wrongs her and the society. Prepare to get slayed by her delicate, funny, and vital charm.
